Tuberculina is a widespread mitosporic (lacks a sexual state) fungus commonly found as a hyperparasite (a parasite that lives at the expense of another parasite) on rusts. The species T. maxima, or “purple mold” or “lilac fungus”, attacks white pine blister rust cankers caused by Cronartium ribicola, and stops them from reproducing. Tuberculina only invades tissue already invaded by the rust, and then dies when the rust dies; therefore it is not a threat. It will only control the rust, but not eliminate it. But some species like Tuberculina nomuriana are a casual agent of white leaf spot. Tuberculina is an anamorph (asexual or imperfect stage) of the genus Nectria. Culture - Potato dextrose agar or Malt extract agar, 20° – 25°C, 7 – 10 days.
